Lucas and the Fairy – Part 2 of 2
“Alright then. First things first,” Lucas started. “I wish that I had something amazing to share at my show-and-tell tomorrow.” The fairy waved her magic wand and said the magic words, “Sim Sala Bim!” Lucas looked around his bedroom.
“Well, where is it?” he asked impatiently.
“Keep loooooking,” said the fairy.
“I can’t see anything except my toys and all of these photos of my family and you can’t expect me to… Wait a minute. You’re trying to trick me into thinking that I can just take the things I already own into my show-and-tell and that’s just sneaky,” Lucas commented.
“You’re right,” said the fairy. “You’re very clever. Why don’t you try another wish, and, if it doesn’t work this time, then you can definitely take me in for your show-and-tell, O.K?”
“Fine,” said Lucas.
He paced around his room thinking of another wish. “I wish that I was the strongest kid in school.”
“Good thinking,” said the fairy and she waved her magic wand again. “Sim Sala Bim!” Lucas rushed over to the mirror and flexed his arms just like he had seen in the movies.
“They don’t look any different,” he commented.
“You didn’t say you wanted your arms to look different, did you?”
“Well, there’s no way to test if I’m the strongest in the school until we get to school! Even then, I’m not exactly sure which kid is the strongest. Might be Billy Coates… but, then again, it might be Jack Percival. How am I meant to figure that out?”
“I have no idea,” replied the fairy. “But, that wasn’t part of our deal.”
“Oh boy, you are staying in that jar for a looooong time,” said Lucas angrily.
“Oh. Now who’s breaking our deal?” asked the fairy.
“Look here, Fairy God-Mo… What is your name, anyway?”
“I’m Astrid,” replied the fairy.
“Hm. Nice name. Nice to meet you, Astrid. I’m P… never mind.” Lucas shook his head. “Now, either you grant me these wishes, Astrid, or you’re staying in that jar forever.”
“Ok, look, I promise, double promise and triple promise to grant you the next wish. The last thing I want is to be trapped in this room and in this jar forever,” Astrid said.
Not wanting to start an argument about whether or not this was his first wish or his third wish, Lucas took his time thinking about how to phrase what he wanted to say next. “I think I can solve this for the both of us,” Lucas said.
“OK, Lucas Fitzgibbon. How’s that?” Astrid asked.
Lucas waited for a moment, then finally said, “I wish for you to be happy in that jar, forever.” Astrid looked up at Lucas with the saddest eyes he had ever seen and lifted her magic wand. “Wait!” yelled Lucas.
But, he was too late, and Astrid said the magic words, “Sim Sala Bim!”
That night, Lucas had trouble falling asleep as Astrid continued happily singing and dancing around the jar, conjuring up new, mostly pink decorations to place in every blank space she could find. When he woke up from what little sleep he had, Lucas rolled over and saw that Astrid’s jar was decorated in the most beautiful way imaginable. He tapped on the glass to wake Astrid up, but there was no reply. Since she was now happy in the jar, Lucas thought it could do no harm to open the lid and check to see if she was alright. Inside, there was no sign of Astrid, just a small piece of paper sitting on top of some pink streamers. He picked it up, unfolded it and read the note that Astrid had written for him.
It really is all lollipops and rainbows
Love, Astrid
Lucas smiled as he tightened the lid of the jar and placed it on the top shelf of his cupboard. He looked around his room, took the photo of his family at the beach from his desk and packed it in his bag before getting ready for school.
